Mexico registers new high-quality soursop variety, boosting global leadership
Mexico is strengthening its fruit production with Perla-AM, a new soursop variety that promises higher yields, better fruit quality, and greater resilience, said the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Local authorities granted the definitive registration of the variety, which was officially integrated into the National Catalogue of Plant Varieties.
Soursop, a tropical treasure with productive advantages
The Perla-AM soursop variety stands out for its large fruit, which weigh nearly three pounds on average. The cultivar also features a creamy-white pulp, excellent flavor and aroma, and yields superior to the national average, making it an attractive option for producers.
Its fruit has a good shape and benefits from natural pollination, which favors both fresh consumption and its use in juices, pulps, and derivatives.
From an agronomic perspective, Perla-AM trees show extended growth and tolerance to branch dieback, a disease caused by the Lasiodiplodia theobrame fungus. This resilience reduces production risks and management costs.
Studies have demonstrated that the variety can adapt to warm and sub-humid semi-warm climates, expanding its cultivation potential across the country.
Reinforcement of Mexico's productive leadership
The Aztec country is the world's largest producer of soursop, and the introduction of Perla-AM comes at a strategic moment to consolidate that leadership.
According to data from Mexico’s General Directorate of the Agri-food and Fisheries Information Service (DGSIAP), national production reached 30 thousand tons in 2024.
Among the nine producing entities, Nayarit leads with 24,718 tons, followed by Michoacán with 2,050 tons and Colima with 1,137 tons.
With the arrival of Perla-AM, Mexican producers and consumers have a new high-quality option that not only boosts the sector's competitiveness but also reinforces the consumption of a fruit emblematic of the country's tropical biodiversity.
