Flash Gala production up in 2025, strengthens international market presence

Flash Gala apples wrapped up an outstanding 2025 season, South African pome fruit exporter Tru-Cape reported. The variety showed a significant recovery in production and sales, strengthening its prospects in destination markets.

Following years of challenges with uneven ripening and inconsistent fruit quality, the firm noted substantial progress. These improvements have enhanced product consistency and elevated the variety's position as a premium market alternative.

Tru-Cape said that Flash Gala production increased from approximately 1.9 million boxes in 2024 to 2.2 million boxes in 2025. The uptick was driven by both orchard expansion and improved performance. Of the total harvest, 68 percent met Flash Gala’s premium specifications, representing a 53 percent increase over the previous year.

“The 2025 season marked the first time the industry received consistently positive feedback across all major markets,” stated Calla du Toit, Tru-Cape’s director of sourcing and president of the BigBucks Growers’ Association.

Technical efforts drive results

Representatives attribute Flash Gala’s positive results to a highly coordinated effort across the entire value chain.

According to Du Toit, the season’s success was due to stakeholder commitment, ongoing support from the technical committee, favorable international market conditions, proper color development in the fruit, and a strategy focused on quality and brand strengthening.

With 36 authorized packing houses and 34 marketers, standardization has been vital. Regular technical meetings, field inspections, and digital platforms have optimized operations and facilitated seamless knowledge transfer.

Advancements in handling have also mitigated sunscald damage. Tru-Cape noted that the intense red color of Flash Gala provides natural resistance, while new protocols help identify latent damage before the fruit reaches the market.

Furthermore, adopting at least two harvest passes has proven essential for achieving the ripeness and uniformity required for premium exports.

Positive outlook

These measures have yielded impressive pack-out results, with Flash Gala consistently exceeding 80 percent, significantly outperforming conventional Gala varieties.

“The fruit is our true currency. Significant work has been done to ensure that ripening protocols are followed and that our customers consistently receive high-quality fruit. When rules and protocols are followed, the chances of success increase considerably,” said Du Toit.

Projections for the coming year remain optimistic. The industry anticipates an even larger harvest in 2026, providing further opportunities for commercial growth and strengthening the variety's global footprint.

“With a solid foundation already in place, Flash Gala is well-positioned to offer better returns to growers while reinforcing its reputation as a premium offering in both local and export markets,” concluded Du Toit.
