Mansfields launches first commercial season of UK-grown Sassy apples

Mansfields’ first UK-grown Sassy apples are making their market debut this season, as part of the firm’s plans to expand production.

The company is the variety's exclusive UK grower; it was developed in New Zealand and is grown in countries such as Australia, South Africa, and markets across Asia.

The first British harvest has now been completed, marking the beginning of Mansfields' long-term plans for the variety, with larger volumes expected next season.

Sassy, a key addition for Mansfields

Sassy features intense red coloring, a crunchy texture, and a sweet flavor with a touch of acidity. The variety combines genetics from Fuji, Sciros, and Scifresh, and was developed to maintain high quality after harvest.

Additionally, the cultivar is an early-ripening fruit that develops its red color even under warmer growing conditions.

James Miller, Managing Director of Mansfields, highlighted that adding Sassy represents a milestone for the company and a fresh alternative in the UK-grown apple market.

“This first harvest offers consumers a taste of what is to come, and with greater production planned for next season, we are looking forward to establishing Sassy as a key part of our UK apple range,” he said. “Sassy offers something truly distinct, and we are excited for its future.”

The variety also aims to stand out through a fashion-led brand strategy and eye-catching visual design, which recently saw it featured in British Vogue as one of the season’s must-have edible accessories.
