Growing Thai demand for premium fruit brings opportunity for US growers
Thailand’s burgeoning appetite for premium produce is unlocking high-stakes growth for United States fruit growers. According to a recent assessment by the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), opportunities are greater than ever for apple, cherry, berry, table grape, and citrus producers.
Thai consumers are increasingly seeking high-end fruit for personal wellness and as seasonal gifts, an Asian staple. The expansion of modern retail chains and hypermarkets across the country further facilitates access to these high-value consumer segments.
“US exporters that prioritize premiumization, strategic timing, and modern trade partnerships are well-positioned for continued growth,” the report notes.
Ripe opportunities
While the apple category faces fierce price competition from regional low-cost producers like China and structural agreements with New Zealand, the US retains a strong grip on the premium tier.

The report identifies growing opportunities for club varieties and premium apples such as Cosmic Crisp, Honeycrisp, and Gala.
“Thai consumers look for exceptional crunch, sweetness, and cosmetic perfection, and are willing to pay extra for verified US origins,” FAS notes.
Stone fruit, particularly cherries, represent one of the most lucrative and high-growth niches for West Coast exporters. Thanks to the short June to August summer window, US growers can benefit from intense demand coming from high-income consumers.
“Northwest and California cherries are highly prized for gift-giving and luxury snacking. Air-shipped cold-chain integrity is vital here, as freshness and stem color heavily dictate retail pricing,” the report says.

The berry segment tells a similar story. Driven by the health and functional food movement, the category has shifted from an exotic luxury to a mainstream dietary staple.
“Blueberries see the most consistent growth due to their long shelf life and reputation as a ‘superfood.’ While local organic strawberry farms exist in Northern Thailand, they cannot match the year-round consistency, size, and flavor profiles of premium US varieties,” FAS stresses.
US fresh table grapes also benefit from good timing. Seedless green, red, and black varieties from California enjoy sustained brand equity in Thailand.

“The primary export window spans from late summer to winter (August through January). This aligns perfectly with a gap in domestic production and acts as a premium alternative to counter-seasonal supplies from the Southern Hemisphere,” the report states.
As for citrus, the segment saw a drop in imports during 2025, driven by factors such as trade tariffs, inflation, and production shortfalls in Mexico and Spain. This, however, could set the stage for US citrus shippers.
According to FAS, US Navel oranges and grapefruits possess a superior sweetness profile and rind quality that sets them apart in the market.
“They face lower competition during the winter months, offering a high-quality alternative when domestic citrus options lean sour or are out of season,” the assessment notes.
Building exclusivity for the Thai market
Despite opportunities, American suppliers face stiff regional competition. Neighboring countries, including China, Australia, and New Zealand, hold free trade agreements with Thailand that grant them tariff advantages and shorter transit times.
However, the report frames this as a competitive advantage.
“The tariff structure naturally positions US goods in Thailand's lucrative premium tier, where consumers associate US origin with top-tier quality, safety, and prestige, driving strong margins among affluent buyers,” it notes.
Exporters can maximize returns by shipping during seasonal windows when Southern Hemisphere supplies drop.
Direct partnerships with major Thai supermarket chains, high-end grocers, and modern e-commerce delivery platforms will provide the reliable cold-chain infrastructure necessary to maintain fruit condition from port to consumer, FAS says.
