Mexico aims to boost grapefruit exports in Europe, Asia

Mexico's Union of Social Sector Citrus Growers has announced plans to promote the export of grapefruit to Europe and Asia for the remainder of 2011, website La-verdad.com.mx reported.

Union leader Ricardo Sepúlveda Cantú told the website the move aimed to follow the success of lemon exports from the state of Tamaulipas to the U.S. this year, with a value of around US$30 million.

Meanwhile, the country's Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA) has sent tests for tomatoes to authorities in the Netherlands and Germany, while the testing process has begun with honey for the Japanese market.

The story reported most grapefruit growers are involved in food safety and quality programs, which are key to entering foreign markets.
