Mexico: fruit flies damaging orange crops in Veracruz

Fruit flies have affected 70,000 hectares of orange farms in the Mexican region of Tuxpan in the state of Veracruz, website Oem.com.mx reported.

The story reported the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development and Fishing (SAGARPA) was working on corrective measures.

The pest has meant growers have less options of where they can sell their fruit, and are mainly limited to the domestic markets of Mexico City and Guadalajara with low profits, the story reported.

The pest has also affected the northern Veracruz region of Álamo, where the government is undertaking abatement and prevention measures.
