First Aussie mango shipment to the U.S. 'sold out quickly'

The first shipment of Australian mangoes sent to the U.S. following a market opening last month is said to have been met with 'an extremely favourable reaction from retailers and consumers.' Calypsos in US 1

Queensland-based Grower OneHarvest dispatched 700 trays of its golden Calypso-branded mangoes to the U.S. as part of a commercial trial organized by the Australian Mango Industry Association (AMIA).

The company said the trial had been made possible due to the development of export protocols to allow irradiated Australian mangoes into the U.S.

It added the initial shipment marked the beginning of a three-year export program that would test the market's appetite for the fruit and build awareness.

OneHarvest partnered with Giumarra for the launch of Calypso into the U.S. and retail trials were conducted in Texas and California, with samples also sent to key retailers across the country.

The organization added that the fruit captured a lot of positive attention and sold out quickly, 'arguing well for the future of Calypso mangoes in the U.S.'

Australian growers produced 45,000 metric tons (MT) of mangoes in 2012-13 with exports valued at AUD$16 million (US$13 million).
