Trump announces 35% tariff on Canadian imports

U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a 35% tariff on Canadian imports, separate from all sectoral tariffs.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture addressed the tariff back-and-forth by stating that "any disruptions, like new tariffs, will directly impact farmers, food businesses, and consumers on both sides of the border," since "over half of Canada’s agri-food imports originate in the U.S., while 60% of Canada’s agri-food exports head south."

In a letter shared on social media addressed to Canada's prime minister, Mark Carney, Trump also said Canada could evade the tariff by deciding "to build or manufacture products within the United States."

If Canada retaliates, Trump said the nation will add "whatever number you choose to raise them by" to the 35% U.S. tariff. “I must mention that the flow of fentanyl is hardly the only challenge we have with Canada, which has many tariffs, and non-tariff policies and trade barriers,” Trump added.

In response, the prime minister announced a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss trade negotiations with the U.S. and vowed to defend Canadian and U.S. workers and businesses and work with the United States.

The higher rates would go into effect Aug. 1.
