Michoacán avocados move forward with geographical indication of origin protection

Mexico’s Official Gazette of the Federation published the request for a Declaration of Protection of Geographical Indication of Origin (GIO) corresponding to the "Aguacate Franja Michoacán" (Michoacán Avocado Strip).

The publication formally begins the process that seeks to legally recognize and safeguard the origin, quality, and reputation of the state's main agro-food product.

The Governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, celebrated the progress and explained that the publication, issued by the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), opens a two-month public comment period. This part of the process is key to consolidating a designation that will prevent the misuse of the region's name by external producers.

"The seal of identity is, in effect, a life insurance policy for our 'green gold.' We are not just protecting a product; we are protecting the prestige of Michoacán before the world," the official said at a press conference.

Ramírez Bedolla stressed that the GIO will strengthen the commercial value of Michoacán avocado in national and international markets. Currently, the state accounts for 31 percent of global avocado production and contributes 86 percent of Mexican exports of the fruit.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Economic Development, Claudio Méndez, detailed that only avocado producers who comply with specific criteria may apply for authorization to use the GIO.

These specifications include fruit shape and color, percentage of dry matter, good environmental practices, type of harvest, quality standards, and proper conservation management.

With this step, Michoacán moves toward a protection scheme that seeks to ensure traceability, differentiation, and greater competitiveness for its avocado in global markets.
