Turners & Growers to compensate New Zealand Jazz apple growers

New Zealand growers of the Jazz apple variety will receive a one-time, $1-per-tray payment from Turners & Growers to offset the effects of the high New Zealand dollar, according to local website National Business Review.

The payment shows T&Gā€™s support for the Jazz, said company managing director Jeff Wesley, and he called on the varietyā€™s owner, Plant and Food research, to make a payout as well, according to the website.

ā€œThis is a fantastic variety, itā€™s recognized as one of the best in the world, but like many export sectors, apple growers are taking a hit with the exchange rate,ā€ Wesley is quoted as saying.

The Jazz is the highest priced apple in most markets, but New Zealand growers have not seen the profits because of the exchange rate. Jazz growers in Europe are reaping benefits because their currency has not been as affected, Wesley said, according to the website.

The growers will receive the compensation in their final payment for the season on Nov. 25. About 1.5 million cartons of Jazz were exported this season, the website said.
