NZ opposition supports Zespri

New Zealand opposition leader Phil Goff has pledged his support for the current single-point-of-entry system for the country's kiwifruit industry, newspaper Bay of Plenty Times reported.

Goff told a group of Zespri executives in Tauranga he believed the kiwifruit industry as it stood was acting in the interests of New Zealand, the story reported.

"It is something that is working and you don't fix it. Deregulation can have counterproductive effects and we think the industry does work on behalf of the country," he was quoted as saying.

He said if elected his Labour government would cut the goods and services tax (GST) by 15% for fruit and vegetables, the story reported.
