Brazil expects orange production squeeze in 2012-13

The Brazilian citrus-growing belt of São Paulo and Triângulo Mineiro is set for a 15% year-on-year fall in orange production for the 2012-13 season.

Brazil's National Association of Citrus Juice Exporters has forecast the region will produce 364 million cartons of 40.8kg (90lbs) this year.

In May 2011 it was forecast the 2011-12 season would yield 387 million cartons, but excess rains led to larger-sized fruit and a volume of 428 million cartons.

The association noted the level of precipitation was below the historic average between February and April this year, which could negatively affect the 2012-13 harvest.
