U.S.: NY announces US$20M food hub in the Bronx

While the Hunts Point Terminal Market brings in annual revenues of around US$2.4 billion in fruit and vegetable sales,Ā New York GovernorĀ Andrew M. Cuomo plans to bring a new farm-fresh market to the same borough.

The 20,000 square-foot Greenmarket Regional Food Hub in Hunts Point is expected to create 245 jobs (95 permanent, 150 in construction) and distribute New York State-grown products.Ā New York State Grown & Certified - apple

The move comes as part of the "New York State Grown & Certified Food Program" designed to increase access to farm-fresh food and promote producers from Upstate New York.

In a release, the Governor said the certification would go to producers who adhere to New York'sĀ food safety and environmental sustainability programs, and would assure customersĀ the food they are buying is local and produced at a higher-standard.

ā€œNew York State agriculture is an essential pillar of our economy, bolstered by the modern market demands for safer and more sustainable food,ā€ Governor Cuomo said.

ā€œThe New York Grown & Certified Program strengthens the link between producers and consumers and provides new opportunities for agricultural development.

"By connecting Upstate farmers to new markets with a state-of-the-art food hub and promoting the consumption of healthy and environmentally conscious food, these initiatives will have extraordinary environmental, nutritional and economic benefits for all New Yorkers."
