Indian grape prices tumble in EU amid large Chilean volumes

India's table grape export season into Europe may have got off to a good start, but an influx of Chilean fruit later in the campaign reportedly took a dramatic toll on market prices.

Publication Financial Express reported officials from the All Indian Grape Exportersā€™ Association said although there had been good sales movement, along with greater shipments than the previous season, prices were almost half the level of last year.

The officials said that at this time last year Indian exporters were fetching around 65 rupees per kilogram, the figure had now dropped to 35 rupees.

Europe is one of India's biggest table grape export markets. This campaign so far the country has exported around 1113,000 metric tons (MT) compared to 84,384MT last season.

The association's president Gagandada Khapre explained prices had begun dropping from mid-March when Chilean table grape volumes to Europe increased, according to Financial Express.

He added Chile had turned more attention to the European market this season as a result of unattractive prices in the U.S.

India exported around 1,920,000MT of table grapes in 2014, and the story reported the country was likely to cross this mark this year due to good weather in growing regions.
