California Navel crop to fall 7% in 2019-20

California Navel orange production is forecast to fall by 7% year-on-year to 76m cartons, according to a USDA estimate.

Of the total Navel forecast, 73m cartons are estimated to be in the Central Valley. Production of the Cara Cara variety in the region is forecast at 6m million cartons.

These forecasts are based on the results of the 2019-20 Navel Orange Objective Measurement (O.M.) Survey, which was
conducted from June 15 to Sept. 1.

Estimated fruit set per tree, fruit diameter, trees per acre, bearing acreage, and oranges per box were used in the statistical models estimating production.

The varieties forecast in this report include conventional, organic, and specialty Navel oranges (including Cara Cara and Blood orange varieties).
