California Walnut Commission receives $2.6 million grant to expand global market reach

The California Walnut Commission (CWC), representing the world’s second-largest walnut supplier, secured $2.6 million from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s America First Trade Promotion Program (AFTPP) to increase walnut sales in key export markets.

The commission is one among 55 nonprofit organizations receiving funding from this program, which was introduced as part of Secretary Brooke Rollins' three-point trade plan to help American agricultural exporters access new markets and maintain international trading relationships.

A USDA initiative to increase international walnut sales

Timing is critical for California walnut growers. With over 99 percent of US walnuts produced in California and more than 3,700 growers and handlers exporting the fruit year-round, shipments remain the primary focus.

In a press release thanking the agency, the CWC stated it will allocate AFTPP funds to retail programs in select international markets, focusing on driving sales and increasing consumer demand rather than solely building brand awareness.

"With the support of AFTPP funding, the CWC will continue to advance strategic, sales-driven initiatives that connect more consumers with California walnuts around the globe," the commission said in the statement.

This funding announcement comes as US tree nut exporters face changing tariffs and heightened global competition. The US is the largest exporter of walnuts, with more than 70 percent of domestic production exported annually.

AFTPP is a precursor to increased USDA funding resulting from the Working Families Tax Cuts. Beginning in fiscal year 2027, the agency will receive an additional $285 million annually for supplemental market development.
