Philippine Carabao mango makes Canada debut

A one-metric-ton shipment of fresh Carabao mangoes touched down in Vancouver on September 18, marking the Philippines' first commercial foray into the Canadian produce market. 

The 250-box shipment flew from Parañaque City, southern Manila, through a joint effort by exporter Mensch FilAm Corp. and the Department of Trade and Industry’s Export Marketing Bureau. 

Vancouver-based distributor Fresh Makers Ltd. imported the fruit to supply area supermarkets and institutional buyers, with Air Canada handling air freight and Airspeed Cargo managing logistics.

Known internationally as the Philippine or Manila mango, the Carabao variety stands out for its exceptionally high sugar content and smooth texture. 

Carabao mango sector readies for global trade

Philippine agriculture officials view the Canadian opening as a crucial proving ground to boost farmgate returns and scale up fruit exports across North America.

To meet strict Canadian phytosanitary standards and ensure reliable volume, the Philippine government helped merge more than 40 grower organizations into a unified national federation. The new group aims to streamline supply chains, pool harvest volumes, and help producers meet international quality protocols.

Government agencies are simultaneously tackling local pest pressures and phytosanitary hurdles that previously limited long-haul shipments.

Agriculture officials noted that turning Canada into a permanent market will depend heavily on freight rates, repeat retail orders, consistent fruit grade, and stable year-round volume.
