Australian appointed head of international organic organization

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) has appointed Australian André Leu as its new president, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported.

Currently chair of the Australia Organic Federation, Leu will head the international body which is based in Germany and represents 750 organic organizations from more than 115 countries.

Tasmanian organic scientist Alex Mitchell, who was at the IFOAM general assembly in Korea for the election, told the ABC it was a significant event for Australia's organic industry.

"Considering that most of the value of organic agriculture happens overseas, and Australia lags a little bit behind in terms of amounts, it's a huge kudos for both André Leu, but also an opportunity for Australia to really start building those links for some of our markets in Europe," he was quoted as saying
