U.S.: University of Florida releases two new citrus cultivars
University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) has announced the release of two new citrus varieties to the market.
The move was voted by the Cultivar Release Committee on April 15, as part of the Citrus Fast Track Release Option which seeks to get varieties to market 10-15 years faster than the 15-20 years usually needed to breed and release such cultivars.
Citrus geneticist Fred Gmitter described the RBB 7-34 as a Navel orange-like variety with much more color and flavor than ordinary Florida Navels, while the UF 711 is an easy peeler mandarin.
The two fruits are part of a 13 cultivar-strong release across a variety of crops, including peanuts, sorghum, triticale, limpograsses and ryegrasses.
