Oasis Dates launches multi-million-dollar campaign to grow category demand

Dates may already have a place in the produce aisle, but Oasis Dates wants them on the smoothie menu, in the baking mix, and even in a better-for-you candy bar. With bold packaging, functional snack innovations, and a cross-channel marketing campaign, the company is setting out to make dates an everyday staple for a much broader audience.

The firm is North America's largest date processor and packer and is vertically integrated with Medjool date farms across the continent, CEO Adam Cooper told FreshFruitPortal.com. The new consumer brand of the same name brings that operation under a unified identity designed to improve category awareness and differentiate its products on retail shelves.

“We think that there's a big opportunity to double demand over the next five years,” he said of the renewed marketing efforts.

Cooper, who previously led marketing for Wonderful Pistachios, Wonderful Halos and POM Wonderful at The Wonderful Company, said that experience informed Oasis Dates' approach to branding, packaging, and retail marketing.

Oasis Dates’ big bet on functional trends and digital channels

The new packaging will feature bold colors and minimalist messaging to distinguish organic and conventional Medjool dates, as well as pitted and whole fruit. Each product prominently features the brand's central message, supported by three key pillars: a healthy sweet treat, a natural energy boost, and a culinary secret weapon.

“Health matters to consumers, but so does enjoyment. They want to have this great taste, which, of course, Oasis Dates have, being really sweet, while also being healthy and having benefits like fiber for gut health and potassium for heart health,” Cooper said.

The company found that consumers often lack knowledge about dates' benefits and how to use them.

“We learned through our major research study with consumers that there's actually more potential consumers than there are current consumers,” Cooper said.

To capture this demand, the firm is also expanding its portfolio with a line of functional products called Boost, which will sit under the main brand alongside its core offerings.

The lineup includes Salted Caramel Energy, with 100 milligrams of natural caffeine, and Cinnamon Oat Gut Health, with 8 grams of fiber. The products use distinct colors to differentiate the functional varieties while maintaining a consistent visual identity with the broader Oasis Dates portfolio, Cooper explained.

The executive noted that retailers have responded positively to the concept, and that Oasis is supporting the launch with “multiple really cart-stopping displays.”

Cooper said the strongest bet, however, is on digital and social media, where influencer content has helped many discover the many possibilities of date consumption.

“This multimillion-dollar marketing campaign is the largest in the history of the category, and it will cover both consumer digital channels like Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, and YouTube,” he stressed.

Oasis Dates also plans to use geographic targeting to concentrate digital advertising around stores that carry its products.

In-store displays will feature the brand's versatility message and highlight specific product uses. For example, one Medjool date display features a banana-date smoothie, encouraging retailers to place it near banana displays to promote cross-purchasing.

The firm also plans to introduce a football-themed display in January to target shoppers preparing game-day snacks ahead of the Super Bowl.
