Natural Delights boosts date production with weather-powered crop gains

Favorable weather across Bard Valley is giving date grower Natural Delights more room to maneuver this season. Stronger per-tree yields have put the firm ahead of last year’s numbers, allowing the California-Arizona producer to support retail programs while also expanding operational investments.

“We’re continuing to convert more acreage to drip irrigation to improve water efficiency, while also working toward regenerative organic certification across the majority of our farms,” CEO David Baxter told FreshFruitPortal.com. 

That commitment, he said, extends “beyond soil and environmental stewardship” to worker welfare practices.

Natural Delights plans to unveil some of these structural developments at the October International Fresh Produce Association Global Produce & Floral Show in Orlando, Florida, but Baxter said the immediate priority is strengthening brand awareness.

"This next chapter is centered on building a stronger connection between consumers, the brand, and the story behind our fruit," he said. 

A date on the produce aisle

The category has gained traction in recent years, as consumers incorporate it into everyday snacking and as a natural sweetener in other preparations, an aspect where the fruit shines thanks to its sweet, caramel-like taste. 

Baxter said Natural Delights believes the segment’s expansion has contributed significantly to the company’s green numbers.

“Consumers are increasingly seeing dates as an easy, naturally sweet option that fits into daily routines beyond traditional seasonal occasions,” he noted.

Baxter explained that the company works closely with retail partners to increase visibility through shipper displays, dedicated racks, and other front-facing merchandising opportunities. Natural Delights is also investing in activations during traditional retail periods, such as back-to-school, to create additional opportunities for displays, promotions, and cross-merchandising.

Beyond the Medjool mainstream

Specialty varieties are also contributing to the company's effort to broaden the category. Baxter said those varieties, along with value-added products, expand consumers' exposure to different date experiences and have particular appeal among multicultural consumers and shoppers seeking different varieties, flavors, and textures.

Natural Delights offers a premium lineup of date varieties led by its signature whole, pitted, and organic Medjool dates, widely known as the "King of Dates" for their large size, soft texture, and rich caramel sweetness. 

Beyond their classic selection, the brand features rare specialty Ajwa dates, a smaller, firmer variety known for its deeply layered notes of honey, caramel, and warm cinnamon. 

They also offer innovative, flavor-packed snacks like bite-sized Mini Medjools rolled in ingredients like cacao, pecan, or coconut, alongside sweet-and-spicy Medjool Date Strips with Tajín chili-lime seasoning.
