Tanzania aims for $1B horticulture industry by 2015

The Tanzania Horticulture Association (TAHA) has announced targets to reach US$1 billion in earnings for the industry by 2015, The Guardian on Sunday reported.

The association's strategic plan has outlined budget allocation and promotional issues facing the industry, as well as incentive packages it will lobby to the government, the story reported.

"TAHA has its long and short term plans on how to grow the industry and through its well established plans," TAHA executive director Jacqueline Mkindi told the newspaper.

Tanzania faced large infrastructure constraints with airports, feeder roads and laboratories, while there were also difficulties with technical capacity in terms of production, marketing, post harvests and standards compliance, the story reported.

A TAHA report says Tanzania's horticulture industry recorded around US$340 million in 2009/10, having risen from just US$1.4 million in 2002.
