Peruvian mango exports exceed expectations despite rains

Peruvian mango exports have risen slightly above the November revised estimate of 63,000 metric tons (MT), according to the country's growers' association.

The revised estimate last year represented an almost 50% cut from the initial forecast, while in a February release the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM) said heavy rains could further reduce shipments to 56,700MT.

But APEM manager Juan Carlos Rivera tells www.freshfruitportal.com the overall effects on volumes were not as bad as they could have been, with season exports to week 10 hitting 65,000MT.

"Most of the exports have finished but there are still some shipment volumes expected from Piura and Lambayeque," he says.

"For those growers who haven't been affected there have been some very attractive returns this year, but I can't say whether it has been a good or bad season.

"It has been difficult for growers who have lost production from rains. We have seen better times and we have to do a lot of work on pruning, irrigation and fertilizer to improve for next year."
