Solar panels to fuel Dutch cold storage facilities
The Dutch port town of Maasvlakte has become home to an extensive solar panel installation, directed at supplying energy to cold storage facilities.
A total of 1,800 panels, with an expected annual yield of 430,000 kWh, have been installed on the rooftop of the Kloosterboer Delta Terminal. The production equates to the annual energy consumption of 130 households, Kloosterboer indicated.
The installment has been announced as the largest photovoltaic power station in South Holland. It comes as part of efforts by Kloosterboer, which has taken on full financing of the project, to establish itself as an environmentally sustainable operation.
"Kloosterboer is affiliated with the Lean & Green organisation. We run a wind turbine with a capacity of 4 MW in Vlissingen and in October 2013, we became the first cold store company in The Netherlands to be awarded the three star BREEAM-NL new construction certification.
"The completion of the solar panel installation is the next step in sustainability for temperature controlled logistics," the company said in a press release.
Kloosterboer specializes in a variety of temperature-controlled trade operations, including warehousing, stevedoring, forwarding, shipping, customs and logistics.
