Russia to lift ban on Egyptian fresh produce imports

Russia's recently enacted prohibition of Egyptian fruit and vegetable imports looks set to be short-lived, with authorities telling local press outlets yesterday the ban would be lifted within three to five days. red-bell-peppers-panorama

A source at the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) told TASS the decision would cover all produce items except potatoes, in a deal that was agreed upon during talks held on Monday.

The story reported a Russian delegation would visit Egypt in October or November to evaluate phytosanitary measures for potato exports.

The ban only came into place on Sept. 22 with Russian officials claiming phytosanitary concerns were behind the call, however it is widely speculated the measures came in response to a now defunct proposal from Egypt to tighten regulations on Russian wheat imports.

The story reported 47 cases this year where Egyptian plant products were intercepted by Russia with disease-related issues.
