Greenhouse production drives Dominican cherry tomato exports up
Dominican cherry tomatoes continue to gain shelf space in the United States. According to the Caribbean country’s Ministry of Agriculture, exports reached 12.8 million pounds in 2025, up 27 percent from 2024’s 10.05 million pounds. The category accounts for 4.8 million pounds so far this year.
Agriculture Minister Francisco Oliverio Espaillat said the results reflect the sector’s growing ability to compete in export markets with strict requirements.

The government official recently visited greenhouse grower Maguana Tropical’s packing facilities, where the firm showcased cherry tomato production systems and technologies designed to meet US market standards.
The Dominican government said greenhouse production has helped stabilize supply, improve product quality, and support export growth in the country’s southern region. Officials also linked the sector’s expansion to increased economic activity and job creation in rural communities.
Maguana Tropical, which operates as a special free trade zone company, generates about 600 direct and indirect jobs in San Juan province, according to an official press release.

Maguana representative Edwin Ordaz said the company continues to expand and diversify cherry tomato production, with between 10 percent and 20 percent of output sold domestically.

During the event, Espaillat said the government remains focused on modernizing Dominican agriculture through technology adoption and good agricultural practices to improve competitiveness and expand export opportunities.
Ordaz also credited support from the Ministry of Agriculture with helping producers maintain export standards and strengthen the international presence of Dominican produce.
