Mangos México, the platform driving the sector’s transformation and international expansion

Amid an increasingly competitive market subject to strict international regulations, the growth of Mexico's mango industry has brought new challenges for producers and exporters.

It is in this context that Mangos México was born—a platform built to provide strategic information across the sector and strengthen the category’s international projection.

Yamil Gómez Cid, leading promoter of this initiative, explained that the project emerged after years of working directly with mango producers in different regions of the country. His experience coordinating field projects across the country has enabled him to understand the needs, concerns, and challenges currently facing the industry.

"There was a clear need for closer communication channels for the producer, especially for those who work in export and must comply with increasingly demanding regulations," the executive pointed out.

Based on this vision, and together with his wife, he created Mangos México, a knowledge dissemination platform focused on providing technical, commercial, and strategic information for producers and exporters. Currently, the project has a presence on Facebook, YouTube, and podcast platforms, reaching international audiences in countries like Peru and Colombia.

According to Gómez Cid, the digital community’s growth and interest from audiences outside of his country reflect the enormous potential of Mexican mangoes in global markets. Furthermore, he emphasized that the project's internationalization has allowed him to broaden his vision of the sector’s future and detect new commercial opportunities.

The United States, a strategic partner for Mexican mangoes

During the interview, Yamil Gómez Cid emphasized the importance of the United States for the growth and consolidation of the Mexican mango industry.

The North American country remains the largest destination for exports from across the border, becoming a key commercial partner due to the strong demand and logistical proximity between the two countries.

Gómez Cid noted that the commercial relationship between the countries is solid and has enabled Mexican mangoes to establish themselves as one of the most relevant agricultural products in the US market. However, the executive said that the current global context also creates new and exciting opportunities to further strengthen the industry.

"The US market will remain fundamental for our industry, but it is also a good time to explore new commercial opportunities and expand our international presence," he said.

Strategic markets: Europe and Canada

The expert said that Europe and Canada are strategic markets for the expansion of Mexican mangoes. The European Union presents untapped potential, with more than 400 million consumers and a growing demand for tropical fruits.

Currently, Mexican mango exports to Europe account for less than one percent of the total, but Gómez Cid believes there is ample room for growth if logistics are strengthened and commercial agreements are consolidated.

One of the main obstacles to expanding exports to Europe and other destinations is maritime transport. Gómez Cid explained that shipments from Mexico can take more than 25 days to arrive in certain European markets and close to 30 days in Russia.

"Logistics will be the central axis of the industry's future. We can have an excellent product, but if transport or customs fail, all the effort is lost," he stated.

The specialist believes that logistical efficiency will be crucial for the international competitiveness of Mexican mangoes, especially against other producing countries that can leverage their geographical advantages to serve markets such as Europe and Asia.

Traceability and sustainability: the new market demands

Another major challenge facing the sector is traceability. International consumers are increasingly demanding information about a product’s origins, the agricultural practices used in its production, and its environmental impact.

According to Gómez Cid, the future of the industry lies in implementing digital systems able to track a product from the tree to the consumer's table.

"Today the market wants to know which orchard the mango comes from, who produced it, and under what conditions it was cultivated," he explained.

In this context, he stressed that digitalization, control systems, and transparency will be key tools for Mexico to maintain its international leadership in mango production and export.

Finally, Gómez Cid emphasized that the sector must broaden its commercial vision and begin to explore emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East more vigorously. There, he said, the consumption of tropical fruits continues to grow, offering new opportunities for Mexican mango expansion.
