Peru’s industry continues to gain ground in the demanding global avocado market with new formats and continued growth. The sector increased exports by 20 percent in value and 13 percent in volume during the first four months of 2026, according to David Sandoval, CEO of market intelligence firm Fluctuante.

Speaking with FreshFruitPortal.com, Sandoval said Peru continues to push forward despite mounting climate pressures tied to rising temperatures and the El Niño weather pattern.

“The outlook is interesting because we continue to grow, but the climate context is forcing us to make strategic decisions to sustain that growth over time,” he noted.

Sandoval said higher temperatures have already started to affect avocado flowering, although the industry expects the most significant impact to emerge between August and November this year.

The alternating nature of avocado production has prompted the sector to expand into northern Peru and the central Andean region to stabilize yields.

New formats gain traction

Beyond standard fresh-fruit exports, Peru’s avocado hub is doubling down on its diversification push through processed products such as oil, gourmet offerings, and convenience-focused formats.

“International demand is no longer limited to fresh fruit. It wants practical, healthy products adapted to new lifestyles,” Sandoval noted.

According to Sandoval, the industry now focuses on product differentiation, marketing strategies, and adapting products to consumer preferences through new formats in different international markets.

Within this new approach, the frozen avocado segment continues to post strong growth. The category switch presents an alternative for fruit that falls outside fresh-market cosmetic standards.

According to Fluctuante, frozen avocado exports surpassed $100 million for the first time in 2025, increasing nearly 16 percent year-on-year. Between January and April 2026, the segment’s shipments rose 32 percent in value and 14 percent in volume.

“The industry no longer views industrialization with fear. Today, it is seen as a solution and also as a great opportunity for differentiation,” the expert stated.

Frozen avocado prices remain about $0.34 per pound higher than fresh fruit prices.

Key markets and Asia ambitions

Europe remains the leading destination for fresh Peruvian avocados, with the Netherlands and Spain as the largest markets. The United States continues to be an attractive market, he added, but the export window is limited to between May and September due to fierce competition from Mexico.

According to Sandoval, China has become increasingly important to the country's export strategy, with Asia as the country's largest long-term growth opportunity.

China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea are emerging as strategic markets, especially following the logistical expansion driven by the Port of Chancay opening and the trade connection with Shanghai,” he stated.

For frozen avocados, Belgium, Chile, and the US are the main export destinations, while China has also increased its imports of processed avocado products this year.
