Fyffes set to expand regenerative agricultural practices across over 32,000 acres by 2030

Leading tropical fruit grower and distributor Fyffes launched its Regenerative Agriculture Framework, a roadmap to integrate sustainable practices across more than 32,000 acres of banana and pineapple plantations by 2030.

The initiative includes actions to improve soil health, enhance biodiversity, optimize water management, reduce reliance on agrochemicals, and address the impacts of climate change.

Progress will be monitored using a Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system, which will evaluate outcomes across five impact areas.

Fyffes milestones for 2030 and 2035

Developed with growers and agricultural experts, the plan aims to tailor regenerative practices to the specific conditions of banana and pineapple production, while maintaining both productivity and fruit quality.

The company is planning to fully integrate the framework across its plantations by 2030.

By 2035, the firm aims to source approximately 40 percent of fruit volume from suppliers operating under regenerative agriculture practices. 

The company noted that the initiative also seeks to contribute to greater supply chain resilience against challenges such as extreme weather events, water stress, and growing sustainability demands.

Focus on growers and supply chain

For Fyffes, implementing these practices can help improve production systems’ capacity to withstand environmental pressures through better soil and water management and ecosystem strengthening.

The company also highlights benefits for retailers, wholesalers, and foodservice customers, through enhanced security of supply, traceability, and availability of measurable environmental data.

Sheila Morrison, Chief Supply Officer at the company, noted that the future of the banana and pineapple industries depends on building resilience into the agricultural systems that support them.

"Through our Regenerative Agriculture Framework, we are investing in practices that strengthen soil health, improve water management, and enhance biodiversity, while maintaining productive and profitable farms," she said in a statement issued by the company.

Initiatives already underway

Fyffes is already implementing regenerative agriculture initiatives across its operations, building on existing programs related to soil health, biodiversity, and responsible water management.

The new framework will structure and scale these efforts, evaluate results, and extend practices that prove effective to other supply chain actors.

The company is also developing joint regenerative agriculture projects with some of its customers and has channeled resources through Fairtrade certification toward such initiatives in select countries.
