DoorDash to acquire Instacart in $17B deal

Through a joint press release, US delivery platform DoorDash announced it struck a deal with grocery app Instacart to acquire the service for $17 billion. The sum values the app's shares at $65, a valuation 22 percent above the grocery app's closing price on October 22nd, 2026.

According to the companies, the transaction will be at least 75 percent cash, "with Instacart stockholders able to elect cash, DoorDash stock, or a combination of both," subject to compliance with the conditions of the sale.

"The combined company will offer grocers and retailers of every size DoorDash's delivery network and Instacart's grocery and fulfillment technology, in both apps and on stores' own websites, along with the advertising and AI tools each company has built," read the release. "Consumers will have more stores to choose from, more savings opportunities when they choose to shop with a local business, and faster delivery options, while Dashers and Shoppers will have more ways to earn."

Instacart will retain its brand and platform

Other than greater choice for consumers, the companies are promising users will enjoy two memberships for the price of one, which they say would "save them an estimated $100 million per year on membership fees alone." Additionally, they say the merger will bring more earning opportunities for local businesses.

The companies expect the transaction to close at the end of 2027 or the first half of 2028. Until then, the platforms will operate independently, and after closing, DoorDash said the grocery app will retain its brand, enterprise technology products, and its app.
