Peru's passion fruit exports grow 80% in value through October 2010

Exports of Peruvian passion fruit between January and October of this year reached a total of US $251,900, an 80% jump over shipments for the same period last year, local ag-news site agaria.pe reported.

Citing numbers from the country’s commission for the promotion of tourism and exportation (PROMPERU), the total volume of passion fruit exports reached 111,900 metric tons (MT) through October, a 96% increase over last year.

The main destination market for the tropical fruit is Australia, with a 39% share of shipments followed by Chile (36%) and Argentina (22%).

Shipments of the fresh fruit are still a mere fraction of sales of passion fruit juice, which this year has seen exports worth US $22 million, an increase of 67.5% compared to last year, the report said.
