Southern Hemisphere apple and pear exports to rise in 2011

The World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) has announced positive forecasts for Southern Hemisphere apple and pear exports in 2011, with an expected growth rate of 5% to cater for a lower supply in the U.S. and Europe.

WAPA's consolidated crop forecasts were collected from industry groups in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa, showing that export figures could rise to 1,762,705 metric tons (MT) and 827,098MT for apples and pears respectively.

The report said apple and pear stocks were down 4% and 16.7% respectively in the U.S., while they have fallen 12% and 14.5% in Europe.

While Southern Hemisphere exports are pitted to rise, apple crops are expected to fall by 1% while pear crops are expected to rise 10%.

WAPA also announced the 'first step' in developing ties with China, with a Chinese representative attending the association's meeting at Fruit Logistica in Berlin.

WAPA has announced Kevin Moffitt from the U.S. as its new president while New Zealander Peter Beaven from Pipfruit New Zealand has been elected the new vice-president of the association.
