Brown orange developed in Australia

An Australian fruit grower has developed a brown orange variety that could be released to the market in two years, website Abc.net.au reported.

Riverina grower Frank Mercuri told the media agency he had secured plant breeders' rights to the variety, which is like a normal navel orange but with brown skin.

"There is a lot of interest for it already from overseas, people have come to see it," Mercuri was quoted as saying.

"The real good thing for people is it's going to be real sweet at that time of the year which is early June, when navels normally are.

"Now we've done some trials and it keeps being sweet, so it looks like it might stay true to type."
