Mexico: APEAM holds avocado forecast steady despite hail event

The Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers Association of Mexico (APEAM) is sticking to its initial crop forecast for the 2015-16 season, despite reported damages from a recent hail event. avocado close-up

"As you know, last week we experienced a very unusual and intense hailstorm in many areas of our avocado region in Michoacán. APEAM has been evaluating the situation, and our initial observations show that there are no significant losses in quality or quantity to this season's remaining crop," APEAM said.

"As for next season's crop (2015-16), some flower and fruitlet drop has been observed. The impact of this drop is being further analyzed and will be reflected in our upcoming crop forecast to be presented in May.

"Our thoughts go out to those growers who have been impacted by the storm. Overall as an industry, we are fortunate that impact has been relatively minimal."
