New fruit wholesale market to become largest in eastern China

Jiaxing Fruit Market, one of the largest domestic fruit wholesale markets in China, now has a new neighbor.

On Jan. 21, a grand opening ceremony was held at Jiaxing World Fruit City (WFC), which aims to become the largest market for imported produce in the eastern part of the country.

Fang Zengliang, WFC general manager and chairman of YouGuo, said the new market would be divided into three sections: global fruit trade; e-commerce and supermarket purchases; and cold storage.

“There's an increasing demand for imported fruits among wholesalers,” Feng said.

“What you saw on Jan. 21 was phase I of WFC, which was mainly built for the management office and the e-commerce business.

“Phase II and III of WFC, even larger in capacity and size, will be built across from Phase I.”

Fang believed Jiaxing's geographical location would give WFC an edge.

“Jiaxing is located in the north-eastern part of Zhejiang province, which is close to the transportation hub of the Yangtze River Delta region,” he said.

“Shanghai and Jiaxing have their respective advantages, but there's no direct competition.”

Dalian Yidu, Golden Wing Mau, Kingo Fruits and several other produce firms have opened offices at the new market.

“Right now, imported fruit wholesalers make up a large portion of WFC's e-commerce branch. As for fruit supermarkets, Pagoda and a number of other firms have joined us,” Fang added.
