Planasa shines a light on its varietal innovation at Fruit Attraction 2025
Global berry developer Planasa concluded an exceptional participation at Fruit Attraction 2025 in Madrid, Spain. The company recorded record attendance and strong interest in its varietal portfolio from producers, distributors, and retailers from around the world.
With a stand that significantly increased in size compared to previous years, Planasa once again consolidated its position as a key player in genetic innovation, showcasing the latest advances from its berry breeding programs.
This year, the company also sought to open the discussion on segmentation and category management of berries in supermarkets. Planasa's booth featured a striking display area that drew widespread attention and effectively demonstrated the commercial potential of its varieties at the point of sale.
Blueberries in the spotlight
The blueberry segment was one of the main highlights, thanks to the strong performance of the Blue Maldiva, Blue Madeira, and Blue Manila varieties. These berries continue to expand their presence in key markets, shining in countries such as Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Mexico, Peru, China, and South Africa.
These varieties stand out for their high productivity, excellent firmness, and outstanding flavor, attributes that make them among the most sought-after by both growers and consumers.
In Peru, Blue Madeira is emerging as a profitable alternative for varietal renewal, as its harvesting costs are lower than those of older genetics.
Raspberries, a juicy classic
Raspberry was another key focus. Planasa introduced Pink Loira, its new variety, which joins the catalogue alongside Pink Hudson, appreciated for its excellent performance in double cropping and its remarkable agronomic and organoleptic qualities.
Alongside them, Adelita continues to be a benchmark for winter production thanks to its reliability and productivity.
In addition, Pink Rosita is proving to be a promising alternative for colder climates, with successful results in Belgium and the Netherlands in recent years, particularly due to its harvesting efficiency.
Strawberries are still going strong
When it comes to strawberries, RedSayra continues to play a leading role in Spain, where it is among the most widely planted varieties, but it is also gaining traction in other European regions.
Its rusticity, earliness, and fruit quality make it a favorite among nurseries and growers, establishing it as one of the benchmark varieties in the sector.
Developing the produce of the future
The Planasa R&D team also highlighted progress in its blackberry breeding programs, focusing on developing varieties with excellent fruit quality, high yields, and improvements in agronomic traits such as thornlessness.
In addition, the company continues to strengthen its activities in other strategic crops such as garlic, asparagus, and endive, while also exploring new opportunities in avocado and cherry breeding programmes aimed at obtaining new and improved varieties.
