Peruvian Hass avocados unlock long-awaited market access to the Philippines
In a work plan signed on Friday, October 21, the Philippines granted market access to Peruvian Hass avocados.
The document is the result of months of bilateral meetings, and it was ratified by the Asian country's Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) and Peru's National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA).
The agreement establishes a strict phytosanitary protocol and operational guidelines for the entry of Peruvian Hass avocados, aiming to expand agricultural trade, foster closer international cooperation, and protect local food systems.
"This event represents not only the successful completion of a series of technical discussions and evaluations but also a symbol of trust and mutual commitment to advancing plant health, market access, and agricultural trade between the Philippines and Peru," said the BPI on a Facebook post.
In the statement, the Filipino agency emphasized the importance of the phytosanitary protocol established in the agreement, which ensures "that imported produce meets the highest standards of plant health and food safety."
In a LinkedIn post, SENASA celebrated the work plan and noted that Peruvian Hass avocados might not be the only crop making the trip across the ocean. Table grapes and citrus would also be regulated under the agreement, though it is unknown whether the exact guidelines and protocols apply to those exports.
The Philippines' growing love for Peruvian Hass avocados
According to the local news outlet PhilStar Global, data from the Philippines' Department of Agriculture shows that the Hass variety is popular in the country for its rich flavor and creamy texture.
The fruit’s smaller size and distinct pebbly skin, the news site reports, make it appealing in markets such as the Philippines, and drive demand in both retail and foodservice environments.
The agreement is expected to help stabilize local supply during the off-season and to offer consumers more options at competitive prices, says online news source Pwersa Balita.
