Panama pineapples land at Costco in Toronto

Panamanian pineapple continues to gain presence in the Great White North. Thanks to coordinated efforts between the country and the Canadian productive sector, the fruit is now available at Costco stores in Toronto.

According to the Central American country's Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI), seven containers of pineapple have been sent to the Canadian market, while the volume of exports continues to increase.

Currently, three containers are shipped per week, and projections indicate expanding distribution to more Costco stores and extending shipments to Western Canada over the coming months.

Beyond the Panamanian pineapple

The MICI explained that this achievement began when a Canadian buyer expressed interest to the country’s diplomatic representatives in North America in importing Panamanian fruit.

From there, the country's representatives coordinated actions to identify producers with export capacity and facilitate the necessary commercial contacts.

"This joint effort today translates into the presence of the Panamanian pineapple in one of the main retail chains in Canada," noted Eric Dormoi, MICI’s National Director of Exports.

The official added that the buyer also expressed interest in incorporating other fruits from the country into their offering, which could open new opportunities to diversify the country's exports, strengthen its productive network, and expand the presence of the Panamanian fruit offering in that market.

The authorities noted that this advance takes on special significance on the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the nations, reflecting cooperation that continues to drive bilateral trade and growth.
