Peru's avocado exports increase 24% through November

Peru’s avocado exports from January to November 2010 totaled US $83.2 million, 24% more than the same period in 2009, according to export association ADEX.

Exports to Europe and the U.S. helped propel the increase, ADEX said in a news release.

The Netherlands was the principal market, taking in US $38.1 million worth of avocados, a 13% increase, followed by Spain (up 44%), France (up 26%) and the United Kingdom (up 11%), according to ADEX figures. The United States came in sixth with imports valued at US $762,891, more than five times the value of imports in 2009.

Peru’s agricultural health agency is working with its U.S. counterpart to try to remove quarantine rules for its avocados in that market, the release said.

Exporter Camposol sent the most, with shipments worth US $15.3 million, followed by Consorcio de Productores de Fruta S.A. and AVO Peru S.A.
