Tax fears for Honduran citrus growers
Honduran citrus growers are concerned their industry could disappear with the introduction of a 12% production tax, website Latribuna.hn reported.
National Federation of Farmers and Ranchers Leopoldo Durán, told the website there were fears the industry was to be 'sacrificed' by Decree 110-2011.
He said the proposed tax actually served to protect orange juice producers who used dyes and other products not made in Honduras, the story reported.
He said the tax would lead to a deterioration of conditions for around 5,000 farmers in the Colón area, which is known as the Honduran citrus capital, the story reported.
