Peru needs higher yielding blueberries, says Beltrán

A Peruvian blueberry leader has called on his compatriots to plant higher yielding fruit instead of the Biloxi variety that is common at the moment, website Agraria.pe reported. blueberry_32490223 small

Terra Business SAC general manager Federico Beltrán Molina told the newspaper while Biloxi blueberries allowed the industry to increase the amount of works dedicated to the crop, it's yield was still just 1.5kg (3.3lbs).

He said this was around six times lower than other varieties that could be introduced into the country, such as Ventura, Jewel or Emerald.

"To start in business the Biloxi variety can be considered, but from there and onwards you have to look to varieties developed for climates like the Peruvian coast, with low cold hour requirements and high productive potential," Beltrán was quoted as saying.
