Ecuadorian mangoes gain access to Chinese market

The Ecuadorian mango industry will now have a new market outlet after Chinese authorities granted access on Jan. 28.

China's Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the Peopleā€™s Republic of China (AQSIQ) published a list of approved Ecuadorian growers, packers and exporters that have been registered with quality assurance agency Agrocalidad.

The agreement is a result of the efforts made by Agrocalidad, with support from export promotion group Pro Ecuador through its Beijing office.

The news has been met with great expectations by the Ecuadorian primary industry, which has already seen success in the Chinese market for products including shrimp, bananas, roses and wood.

The U.S. was Ecuador's leading mango export market last year, representing 88% with US$18.9 million, followed by Canada (US$1.1 million) and New Zealand (US$227,570).
