The Hass Avocado Board's (HAB) 'Top 10 Retail Trends' hasĀ taken in a wide variety of factors affecting the market,Ā highlighting the effects of Asian and Hispanic consumers, e-commerce and high produce consumption rates amongst millennials.

Along with its assessment of the retail space, which also includes an analysis of the local food movement, health trends and aggressive expansion plans for fresh format stores, the HAB also makes recommendations about what shippers, handlers and retailers can do to help build the Hass avocado category.

"The industry is still witnessing dynamic changes in the retail landscape with traditional grocery retailers losing market share as limited assortment stores, fresh format stores and dollar stores gain market share,ā€ HAB executive directorĀ Emiliano Escobedo said in a release.

"Online grocery shopping continues to shift consumersā€™ shopping preferences, and retailers are adopting new technologies to remain competitive.

"This is an exciting time for the produce industry and this report is complete with industry information that may impact grocery retailers and Hass avocado sales."

The report also highlighted one in five meals was now eaten in the car in the U.S., there was an oversaturation of choice combined with more discount stores in challenging economic times, and millennials were more likely to shop at a range of channels and places known for instant consumption rather than planning ahead.

Promotions using social media that interact with this consumer group [millennials] will be the most successful," the HAB said, highlighting the demographic had the highest consumption rate for produce at 2.7 servings per day.

"Additionally, retailers can help busy families solve their meal solutions by offering easy recipe ideas and freshly prepared meals."

In terms of the U.S. Hass avocado market, arrival volume was down by about 7.5% week-on-week last week atĀ 49,645,355 pounds; the majority came from Mexico with more than 10% coming from California, which was expected to pick up its volumes significantly this week.
