U.S. mango imports up 9%, Mexican season forecasts show growth
U.S. mango imports totaled approximately 4 million boxes in week 26, according to the National Mango Board's crop report. Mexico led shipments with roughly 3.88 million boxes, contributing to a seasonal total of 67.4 million boxes. The Dominican Republic shipped around 126,423 boxes, bringing its season total to nearly 1.95 million boxes.
The primary varieties in the U.S. market remain Kent (54%), Ataulfo/Honey (29%), and Tommy Atkins (14%). Limited supplies of Mingolo, Keitt, Haden, Mallika, Nam Doc Mai, Thai, Manila, and Banilejo are also available.
Size classifications for Ataulfo/Honey mangoes are large (size 16 and larger) and small (size 18 and smaller). Round mangoes are categorized as extra large (7 and larger), large (sizes 8 and 10), and small (12 and smaller).
Looking ahead, overall mango shipments from week 28 through week 32 are projected to be approximately 9% higher year-on-year, with arrivals expected from week 29 to 33. The Mexican season is forecasted to be approximately 12% higher compared to last year, according to industry sources.
