Colombia's avocado industry is steadily strengthening its position in the United States market, as growing consumer acceptance and continued investment across the sector create new opportunities for exporters.
Since gaining access to the US market in 2017, Colombia has significantly expanded avocado production, with more than 135,908 acres now under cultivation. Favorable growing conditions, year-round production potential, improved logistics, and increasing adoption of international certifications have helped Colombian exporters compete in demanding global markets.

According to Daniela Santo, Commercial Director of Coltrópicos, demand for Colombian avocados in the US has begun to increase after several months during which abundant Mexican supplies left little room for alternative origins. She noted that consumers favor Colombian avocados because they closely resemble Mexican avocados in oil content and creaminess.

The growing interest comes despite a challenging season for Colombian exporters. Lower fruit availability has been reported compared with previous years, with Colombia exporting 2,298 containers so far this year, according to data from the Colombian intelligence firm SICEX. However, industry participants remain optimistic that the country's main harvest, expected between weeks 32 and 34, will provide additional export momentum later in the season.

The US market remains a relatively small destination compared to Europe, but its importance continues to grow as Colombian exporters seek to diversify their customer base. Rising demand in the United States, combined with Colombia's ability to supply high-quality fruit across multiple harvest windows, could help the country capture a larger share of one of the world's most valuable avocado markets.
As Colombia continues investing in quality, logistics, and market diversification, the country appears well-positioned to further expand its presence in the US market and strengthen its role in the global avocado trade.
