Mexico celebrates a milestone: Michoacán avocados get Protected Geographical Indication

The Mexican Secretariat of Economy officially granted the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Michoacán avocados. The recognition protects the fruit’s origin and strengthens its international prestige, which is closely linked to the state's natural and productive conditions.

The Association of Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers of Mexico (APEAM, for its Spanish acronym) noted that obtaining this PGI represents a new milestone for the industry, which has positioned itself as the world's leading producer and exporter of avocados.

The recognition also provides a new element of differentiation for the Mexican offering, the industry body said, a quality seal that sets the fruit apart in the global market.

More value for Michoacan avocados

The PGI was announced in a ceremony attended by Mexican government officials and members of the Michoacan avocado industry.

Authorities emphasized that this achievement is the result of joint work between producers, packers, phytosanitary bodies, sector associations, and state and federal governments.

Rafael Paz Vega, President of the Board of Directors and legal representative of Producers and Packers of Avocado A.C., pointed out that Michoacán has been the starting point for the development of the modern Mexican avocado industry and recognized the work of those who promoted this initiative since its early stages.

For his part, the President of APEAM, Raúl Martínez Pulido, stated that the PGI recognizes a productive, economic, and cultural heritage built over generations of Michoacan avocado growers. He added that this distinction marks the start of a new stage for the sector, based on higher standards of quality, organization, and a long-term vision.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), Vidal Llerenas Morales, said that this recognition will strengthen the added value of Michoacan avocados, one of Mexico's most iconic agri-food products in international markets, by guaranteeing their origin and their differentiated characteristics.
