Peru’s exports of organic bananas to the European Union were US $19.9 million from January to August, up 3% compared with the same period last year, said the Lima Chamber of Commerce, according to Peruvian news agency Andina.com.pe.

The consumer trend in Europe is pointing toward organic products as a way to improve health and care for the environment, said Alberto Hart, Peru’s trade representative in the United Kingdom, according to the website.

The Netherlands, the main market for Peruvian organic bananas, reduced purchases by 12% despite the positive trend in exports, and exports to the U.K. dropped 87%.

In their place, Belgium increased its imports by 115%, Germany by 82%, Ireland by 11%. Switzerland and Italy began buying the fruit.
