Australia: 'moral obligation to feed the world'
Australian Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce has told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) his country has the moral obligation to feed the world, following World Bank reports that 44 million people had been pushed into poverty since June due to high food prices.
The report showed global food prices had risen 36% on what they were 12 months ago, while a further 10% rise could drive antoher 10 million people into poverty.
"Our job is not just to feed the people we feed, but feed the people we can't feed," Joyce was quoted as saying.
"It's to provide them with quality food and a great quantity of food.
"And it's absurd that our nation puts up our own private little barriers to our capacity to do that."
