Mexican state on HLB alert

The Mexican state of Durango has been put on alert to prevent the entry of citrus disease Huanglongbing (HLB), website Elsiglodurango.com.mx reported.

The announcement was made by the country’s Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA), which is currently monitoring the state's citrus farms and distributing traps that emit pheremones to catch and trap vector insects.

While the government body has launched the preventative measures, it says concerns for the bacterium affecting crops are minimal, given the state's low production of sour fruits.

SAGARPA also plans to erect 'health fences' to identify any sign of the bacterium.
