Chile announces ban for several pesticides

The Chilean Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) has announced a ban on a suite of pesticides, following in the footsteps of other Southern Hemisphere competitors such as Brazil, Peru, Australia and New Zealand.

The pesticides concerned are chlordecone, alpha HCH, pentachlorobenzene, endosulfan, alachlor and aldicarb, according to the Republic of Chile Official Newspaper.

The new law will prohibit the manufacture, import, export, sale and possession of the pesticides concerned in all forms agricultural and forestry formulations.

The move is linked to the Stockholm Convention, which Chile signed onto in 2005.
